Solar Water heating systems

Solar water heating is now a mature technology.

  • Wide spread utilization of solar water heaters can reduce a significant portion of the conventional energy being used for heating water in homes, factories and other commercial & institutional establishments
  • .Internationally the market for solar water heaters has expanded significantly during the last decade.
  • It is estimated that over 107 million sq.m. of collector area has so far been installed world wide for heating water. In the country, the collector area so far installed for water heating is over 1.00 million sq.m. Ministry has plans to add another 1.00 million sq. m. in next two years.
  • “A 100 liters capacity Solar Water Heater can replace an electric geyser for residential use and saves 1500 units of electricity annually.”
  • Though the initial investment for a solar water heater is high compared to available conventional alternatives, the return on investment has become increasingly attractive with the increase in prices of conventional energy.

Solar cooker

A solar oven or solar cooker is a device which uses sunlight as its energy source. Because they use no fuel and they cost nothing to run.

  • Humanitarian organizations are promoting their use worldwide to help slow deforestation and desertification, caused by using wood as fuel for cooking.
  • Solar cookers are also sometimes used in outdoor cooking, especially in situations where minimum fuel consumption or fire risk are considered highly important.
  • Successful solar cooking is dependent upon access to sunshine and the right climate.
  • Though solar cooking is possible in many  if not most  countries, it is most practical for people living in climates that are generally dry and sunny for at least six months of the year.
  • Latitudes between the equator and 40 are usually best. The darker regions on the following map tend to have longer cooking seasons.

Solar drying is in practice since the time im-memorable for preservation of food and agriculture crops.

  •  This was  done particularly by open sun drying under open the sky.
  • This  process has several disadvantages like spoilage of  product due to adverse climatic condition like rain, wind, moist,  and dust,   loss   of  material due  to birds and animals, deterioration  of the material by decomposition, insects  and fungus growth.
  •  Also  the process is highly labor intensive,  time  consuming and requires large area. With cultural and industrial development artificial mechanical drying came in to practice.
  • This process is highly energy intensive and expensive  which ultimately  increases product cost. 
  • Thus solar drying is the best  alternative  as  a solution of all the drawbacks of natural drying and artificial mechanical drying.
  • It not only save energy but also save lot of time, occupying less area, improves quality of the product, make the  process more efficient and protects environment also.

  •  Food  processing  industries  for  dehydration  of  fruits, potatoes, onions and other vegetables, Dairy industries for production of milk powder, casein etc.
